Gallery - Tunnel Art Photography

While traveling Japan, I often reflect on how the journey to the destination can yield as many if not more unforgettable photos as the destination itself. Chasing the light means being open to discovering photographic opportunities wherever they are. Tunnels in particular capture my interest and the interest of many of the professional photographer colleagues. Some people view tunnels in a strictly utilitarian manner, only a means of transportation, a conduit for connecting one location from another. In Japan especially, with so much untouched nature, the tunnels are often only thought of as channels for cars and other vehicles to get people from Point A to Point B. I see them as so much more. My colleagues and I are always chasing the light, and tunnels yield some of the most amazing manifestations of light balanced with the dark. An on some occasions, the light trapped in the tunnels and recorded on film yields images that border on unearthly. Those images, like the one attached to this blog, capture the mystical side of Japan, images that defy explanation and are clearly art.
