Living in Shimane

Shimane Prefecture, located on the western edge of Honshu, is small and narrow, with a coastline facing the Sea of Japan. Shimane's population is just over 712,000, the second least populated prefecture in all of Japan. The majority of Shimane Prefecture's land is mountainous, making it difficult to inhabit, thus many of Shimane Prefecture's residents live along the coast. Shimane Prefecture is scenic and quiet; Matsue City, the capital, has a population just over 200,000 making it the least populated capital city in any of Japan's prefectures. Shimane Prefecture has a high percentage of elderly residents, one of the highest in Japan, and more people aged over 100 years than any other prefecture.
