Omuta's Local Manju
Omuta City (大牟田市) in southern Fukuoka Prefecture is famous for their small kusaki manju (草木饅頭) filled with white sweet bean paste. The local whom I received them from said they call it shiroi azuki - a white version of red beans, also calling it endo mame, which is a string bean. When he translated it, he said it's a white kidney bean.
The manju were wrapped in plastic in rows of five and the box contained 30 pieces.
We enjoyed eating these with tea. The outer part has a kokutou (brown sugar) flavor and the white bean paste is very sweet.
I recommend this meibutsu (local famous food) if you ever find yourself in Omuta City!
