Belgian Cookie Spread, Sold in Japan

All things foreign can be difficult to find in Japan, but I keep finding more and more foods that I didn't see anywhere in Japan even five years ago.

While browsing in the supermarket, I didn't see the cute tiny jars of Snoopy peanut butter I had bought in the past, but next to the Skippy was this:

Biscoff are Belgian cookies (Speculoos) I have only eaten on an international flight (between the US and Japan). I thought they were delightful and can even buy them in the store down the street, although I haven't.

At first I was really confused. One of these jars is labeled crunchy so I thought this was a kind of peanut butter - after all it's next to the peanut butter.

It's just a cookie spread. A search for 'cookie butter' will confirm this is a thing. I had no idea.

Spreading cookies on your toast sounds weird to me, but apparently in Europe, this is used like chocolate spread or nut butters like Nutella (also popular in Japan now). Considering a Dutch breakfast is commonly chocolate sprinkles on toast, this isn't surprising.

So why this, at about 500 yen for 190 grams, but not the Dutch chocolate sprinkles? A friend who has been to the Netherlands mentioned she'd love to buy them here but can't find them.

I'm often confused about which foods get imported to Japan and which ones are left out. It's great to learn about some foods from around the world that I didn't try in the US. (Christmas pudding and stolen, Tim Tams...)

I'm skeptical, but would you try this?
