Winter is Coming...

I feel kinda like a cheat using “Winter is coming” as a title for this post seeing as I’ve never watched an episode of Game of Thrones [I guess the saying is supposed to be about the “snow walkers” or “white walkers” or something?]

In any case, I use the phrase here because I just saw the first sign that winter is imminent here in Yukiguni:

People have started to put posts and planks around their trees and plants.

That’s always step one, because once the first snow falls, it’s too late.

Step two is when the mountaintops get completely white.

Step three is when everyone swaps tires for snow tires.

Step four is when...well, there is no step four, since by that time we’re all just covered in snow.

Oh well—such is life in Yukiguni.

Hitting the books once again as a Ph.D. student in Niigata Prefecture. Although I've lived in Japan many years, life as a student in this country is a first.

Blessed Dad. Lucky Husband. Happy Gaijin (most of the time).
