A Good News Sumo Story to Counter the Controversy
The news this past week obsessed over the controversy surrounding an incident between Yokozuna Haramafuji and kohai Takanoiwa that eventually led to Haramafuji's early retirement. It was an unexpected blow to the sport that is not likely to go away, as Sumo's best-ever wrsetler, Hakuho, has openly contested the events leading to Haramafuji's retirement.
With so much controversy, a true good news story was overlooked, when 39-yearold Aminishiki succeeded in his return to Sumo's top division. Not only was he the oldest-ever to return to the top division, Aminishiki posted a kachikoshi winning record and earned the venerable "Fighting Spirit" prize in the process.
When asked what drove him to such an achievement, Aminishiki tearfully responded that he owes everything to his family's support and does everything for them now.
To me, this is the story that deserved the headlines. Congratulations, Aminishiki, I will be cheering you on next year!
Hitting the books once again as a Ph.D. student in Niigata Prefecture. Although I've lived in Japan many years, life as a student in this country is a first.
Blessed Dad. Lucky Husband. Happy Gaijin (most of the time).
