A Quick Note on National Health Insurance Payments for the new Fiscal Year

A Quick Note on National Health Insurance Payments for the new Fiscal Year photo

Haven't received new billing notification for your National Health Insurance yet?  Me neither.  So I went to the city office to investigate a bit.  I just wanted to offer other newbies to the system some insight I gained.

Let me back up a little bit: I was a little nervous when I saw that there was no National Health Insurance (NHI) payment this month.  I was used to seeing money go to the City Office monthly to cover NHI for me and my family, but I did not see anything deposit for the month of May, and I have yet to receive a new letter with payment information (similar to the extremely blurred picture above--hey, I don't want to be offering all of my PII to the outside world, I've got Equifax to do that for me).  I was a little concerned that I had missed a renewal step or that the system deleted me and my family from the next fiscal year's NHI accounts.

I took my previous year's letter to the city office and asked them what the deal was.

Here's the answer I received:

- NHI rates are calculated based on the previous year's tax information.

- The city office will not start billing you until they determine those rates.

- After the rates are determined (usually by June), you'll receive a letter in the mail with your current Fiscal Year rates, as well as a break down for payments until the end of the Fiscal Year.

- Your medical coverage is fine during the calculation period, so no worries there.

And that was it.  Simple, concise answer, right?  Hopefully that helps out others who may have been wondering the same thing.

If you have any other questions about NHI, I'm no expert, but I'm happy to share the little bit of insight I've gained.  Feel free to use the comments section below!
