The description
This product is a whipped cream and red bean paste filled bread, which was purchased from 7-11 for 149 yen including tax. It's part of their Hokkaido Fair Range which is available for a limited time.
The good
First of all, I love that a convenience store is shining a light on some prefecture-specific favorites. At a time where traveling by train or plane is still a little anxiety-inducing, it's a fun way of bringing the food of other prefectures to you. The bread itself was light and fluffy, and I think whipped cream and red bean paste is a good pairing. It wasn't overly sweet - I find most Japanese breads/pastries are the "Goldilocks" of sweets (just right!) and this was no different. I also thought it was very reasonably priced at only 149 yen. Compared to a lot of other offerings at the moment, this was one of the cheaper things!
The not so good
This is mainly a personal preference insight, but I would have rather seen a koshian red bean paste rather than tsubuan in the bread. I like the smoothness of koshian more than the chunkiness of tsubuan -- it wasn't a deal breaker, though. I also felt that ratio-wise, the whipped cream dominated the red bean paste, and I would have liked to see a little less whipped cream overall. It was still a solid, tasty product though, and for the price I also felt it was very reasonable. I'd repurchase it if I was looking for a quick and budget-friendly snack.
