Why your electricity bill might be worth a second look

If your household is anything like mine, your electricity bills are one of your biggest expenses, especially during summer when the air conditioner seems to run nonstop. A new survey of around 1,000 people responsible for electricity contracts at Japanese companies shows that businesses are feeling the squeeze too.

Around 90% of respondents were aware that electricity prices had risen, while a similar proportion said fluctuations had affected their company's budgeting over the past one to two years.

So, what are they doing about it? The most common measure was reviewing their electricity contract, with 55.5% of companies saying they had done so to reduce costs. Another 42.5% had considered changing electricity providers, while 41.7% had tried to reduce peak electricity demand.

Interestingly, switching providers isn't necessarily an easy decision. More than 80% said they would have some concerns about their existing relationship with their electricity provider.

The survey also found businesses divided between market-linked plans, which can offer savings but fluctuate with the market, and fixed-price plans, which provide more certainty.

For those of us living in Japan, it's a good reminder that cutting electricity costs isn't necessarily just about using less power. Checking your contract and seeing whether your current plan still makes sense could be worth doing!
