Things I didn't try during my first years in Japan: branching out more with food

I will be the first to say that I'm a fairly picky eater. When my husband and I first moved to Japan, we squared away our apartment in Tokyo and then he had to go to Kanazawa for a 6 week long intensive language program for his work. Basically, we arrived, had a few days together to get situated, and then was on my own for that stretch of time.

These days, that doesn't seem like a difficult ask to me. Back then, though, it felt so overwhelming, especially when it came to food. I remember toddling down to the Family Mart down the street most days to pick up simple things that felt familiar. Yogurt. A banana. Those dorayaki with the maple syrup and margarine inside. Back then, there weren't English descriptions on everything at convenience stores, so you basically had to look at something and hope it was something you'd comfortably eat. My nutrition left a lot to be desired.

I look back to that time period now and think to myself what a waste! Even for picky eaters I think there are plenty of ways to enjoy Japanese food. Soba, tempura, katsu, Japanese curry, various ramen types, are all picky-food eater friendly. Also, in Tokyo there are plenty of options for international cuisine, too, whether that's dining out or shopping for bits and pieces at supermarkets that stock international goods.

Love to travel, interested in J-beauty products and consider myself a convenience store snack aficionado. Navigating the ever-present challenges of expat life, particularly about my TCK's (third culture kids).
