Skin health as the overlooked side of Golden Week fun

Golden Week plans usually revolve around travel, food, and maybe squeezing in a bit of sightseeing, but considering your skin health probably isn't high on the list. According to a new survey from Medical Corporation Tetsuketsukai, though, it might be something worth thinking about.

The study found that 78.3% of people experienced some kind of skin trouble after the holiday period, from dryness and irritation to breakouts and sunburn. Despite that, only 19.3% actually sought help from a dermatologist, with most relying on self-care or simply waiting it out.

The biggest culprit is UV exposure, with 42.7% pointing to sunburn or sun damage as the main cause. That was followed by disrupted sleep and lifestyle changes, both of which are pretty common during travel. Once you add in things like different climates, hotel skincare products, and general fatigue, and it starts to make sense why skin can suddenly feel off after a few days away.

Don't forget to lather up on any Golden Week adventures you might be taking!

Dermatologists involved in the study recommended that what you do right after the holiday matters most. Steps like cooling sun-exposed skin, gentle moisturizing, and getting back to a regular sleep routine can make a noticeable difference, but I think those are good self-care steps for regular days, too!
