Lupicia's excellent value for money fukubukuro
I love the concept behind fukubukuro. They’re an opportunity to get a variety of goods at a discounted price, and the fun factor behind the surprise element reminds me a bit of being a kid again. In saying that, the surprise element means that sometimes you’re left with things you don’t want or need, meaning you’ll need to regift or donate lucky bag items.
Because of that, I tend to gravitate towards fukubukuro where I’ll like and use all of the items inside them – and that usually means opting for consumable fukubukuro. A favorite for me each year is the Lupicia tea fukubukuro, and they have several options available at different price points. They include a ¥3240 option, a ¥5400 option, and a ¥10800 option, and I went for the ¥5400 box.
I was able to choose the type of teas that I wanted (to a degree) and I opted for a non-caffeinated box so that I could enjoy some of the teas later in the day – I tend to drink coffee in the morning and have tea as an afternoon/evening drink, so having a non-caffeinated box option was great!
It came with 13 bags of tea, each containing 10 tea bags. The retail value of all of the teas would be over double the price of the box, so I think it’s excellent value for money if you’re a big tea drinker. The varieties I got included classic decaf Earl Grey, flavored teas like apple and muscat grape, and a “sweet dreams” bedtime tea, among others. I think the option I’m most excited about is the caramel and rum tea, which I’m yet to try – it sounds like it’ll be lovely and warming for winter!
Another nice thing about the Lupicia fukubukuro is that the delivery/shipping fee is only ¥220 irrespective of the fukubukuro you choose. I thought that was super reasonable, and it’s particularly nice if you don’t live close by to a Lupicia store.
