Tokyo ranked 5th Happiest City in the world
I always enjoy reading studies about where places in Japan rank on a world scale, and the results from the 2026 Happy City Index had Tokyo in 5th place. It's based on a few different metrics, and I would say it's less about the "cheery" kind of happiness and more from the mindset of "does this city make daily life easy, safe, and comfortable?"...which obviously is an element of happiness!

For instance, some of the factors include things like environment (green spaces), mobility (e.g. public transport availability and reliability), health, and so forth.
A big part of Tokyo's success in the ranking is due to infrastructure and livability, and I think many of us would agree it's where the city shines. Public transport is reliable to an almost absurd degree, the streets are clean, and there's a level of safety that lets you relax in ways you might not be able to back home.
How do you feel about Tokyo's Happy City Index Ranking?
