When snoring becomes a shared health issue in Japan
In many households, not just ones here in Japan, sleep is supposed to be the time to reset after long workdays and packed schedules. However, for a surprising number of couples, nighttime rest is being disrupted by a small but powerful problem: snoring. A nationwide survey of 300 men and women living with their partners found that 94 percent said their partner's snoring had affected their sleep in some way...which is basically everyone!

For most people, the stress isn't extreme, but it is constant. About 70 percent of respondents said their partner's snoring causes them some level of stress, and nearly 20 percent said it sometimes affects their relationship. The most common complaints were not being able to fall asleep, feeling stressed by the sound in the middle of the night, and waking up repeatedly. Many also said they felt tired the next morning, which is especially concerning in a country where fatigue is already a widespread health issue.
What's more worrying is that snoring often isn't just noise. Over 14 percent of respondents said they had noticed their partner appearing to stop breathing during sleep, along with symptoms like loud snoring followed by silence, restless sleep, morning headaches, and extreme sleepiness after waking. These can be signs of sleep apnea, a condition linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and increased accident risk.
Despite these warning signs, many couples haven't taken any medical action. The most common response to snoring was simply doing nothing, and the next most common solution was sleeping in separate rooms. Others encouraged changes in sleeping posture, searched for solutions online, or suggested switching pillows. When asked what they would like to try in the future, people focused mainly on bedding, posture, daily routines, nasal care, and lifestyle improvements, but only a small number said they wanted their partner to get tested at a medical facility.
The survey made a few things clear: in Japan, snoring is widely experienced, often stressful, and still frequently overlooked as a health issue. While small changes like better bedding and posture can help, breathing pauses and severe daytime sleepiness aren't things that should be ignored!
If you're in a relationship, do you notice your significant other snoring at night? Have they taken any steps to address it?
