How Japan spends the rainy season
One thing about rainy season is that it can often require a bit of a rethink of plans, especially when it comes to outdoor activities. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that more than 80% of locals in a recent survey by IBEC Co., Ltd. said they dislike this time of year.

While the rainy season gloom is real, so is the creativity in how people choose to spend their time. The most common rainy day activity? Simply relaxing at home. Over half of respondents said they use the time to rest and recharge, which is something I’ve come to appreciate myself.
Streaming movies, diving into hobbies, and catching up on YouTube were other popular choices. I’ve personally found this period to be a great excuse to finally open those unread books staring at me from my shelves, or start a slow craft project. Others from the survey mentioned taking the opportunity to clean and rearrange their home spaces, which is something that oddly feels more productive when you’re stuck indoors anyway.
Couples, too, are adapting. A majority mentioned enjoying cozy at-home dates, while others head to shopping malls, cafes, and indoor spots like museums or spas. It’s a reminder that Japan has plenty of sheltered and calming spaces to enjoy, rain or shine.
Are you a rainy season lover or loather?
