Strawberry season is coming

Of the saving graces that winter in Japan offers, strawberry season is up there. I'm partial to our local variety, Echigohime, which I think are some of the most fabulous strawberries I've tried in my life.

There are apparently two key varieties (I didn't know this until I researched for this blog!) which are Winter Echigohime (larger and less sour) and Spring Echigohime (an equal blend of sweet and sour).

You can usually start to find Echigohime strawberries here around January, and I for one will be scoping out the farmers market and supermarket produce section to grab some as soon as they arrive!
