Yogurt is the new rice
With the price of rice still a lot higher than many people are expecting, it's causing folks to pivot with their breakfasts of choice for financial reasons. I was a little surprised but still interested to see that one of the "new" breakfast foods gaining popularity here is yogurt, something that I eat a lot of!
The article that I linked above mentions that sales from leading brands like Meiji and Morinaga have surged over the past year, reflecting a move toward protein-rich, quick, and easy meals. Some other foods that have increased in consumption at breakfast time with the reduction of rice include things like potage soup, tamagoyaki, mochi, and sandwiches.
A nutrition professor was quoted in the article stating that for those still incorporating rice into their meals, it's actually better to do so earlier in the day since it helps reset the body's internal clock. Eating rice later in the day can impact blood sugar levels and be disruptive to sleep.
If you have reduced your intake of rice at breakfast time, what are you substituting it with?
