The description
This product is an apple pie made using two types of apples from Aomori Prefecture. It's a limited time offering available from Starbucks and was priced a 620 yen including tax.
The good
I love the focus on regional eats here, and this new pie from Starbucks has apples grown in Aomori Prefecture taking center stage. The pie incorporates both Kougyoku and Fuji apples, which is a great way to highlight the different textures and levels of tartness rather than simply making a generic apple pie. The sweet custard is a lovely addition, and the caramel sauce and spices add a level of warmth without completely overpowering the fruit. Overall, a really delicious taste of the autumn season, I'd happily recommend it if you've got an apple pie craving!
The not so good
At 620 yen for a slice, this is definitely on the pricey side for a piece of apple pie. While the use of the two types of Aomori-grown apples helps explain the price, I'd understand the hesitation from anyone just looking for a simple sweet treat. A single slice also means the cost can add up quickly if you're buying for a family! If you do find yourself really enjoying it, the usual issue also applies that it's only a limited time menu item. It might make a comeback around this time next year, but of course that's never a guarantee!
