Japan home to some of the world's best markets

One thing that I love about living in Japan is the abundance of fresh food here. That's not to say my home country didn't have that, but I feel like here we shop multiple times a week because our local supermarket and farmer's market are easy to access, plus we just don't have as much fridge and pantry space as we would in our home countries. I see that as a positive now, as we think more about the food we purchase, there's less chance of items going bad, and the fruits, veggies, and meats/fish we buy are at their best.

Maybe it's no great surprise, then, that Japan is home to some of the world's best markets–according to recent data from Food & Wine's Global Tastemakers List, anyway. Tokyo's Tsukiji Outer Market came in at 2nd place, and Kyoto's Nishiki Market came in at 5th spot.

While I'm not close to either of those markets out here in the Niigata countryside, I'm certainly grateful for our local farmer's market, and places like Pier Bandai market a little further afield in Niigata City.

Do you have any good markets in your local area?
