The real risk of death from clearing snow in yukiguni

Heavy snowfall is part of winter life here in Niigata, but every year it brings some very real dangers, particularly when it comes to clearing snow from rooftops. A recent fatal accident in Joetsu City was a good reminder of the risk of this, especially for anyone new to a snowy region of Japan.

Just a few days ago, a 76-year-old man was found collapsed beneath the eaves of his home after apparently falling while removing snow from his roof, and he'd been working alone. Although he was conscious when he was discovered and taken to hospital, he passed away later on from his injuries.

It's not an isolated case, either, unfortunately. Authorities are urging people to take precautions, including things like working in pairs or groups, wearing helmets, and avoiding roof work whenever possible. A lot of homes out here now opt for a sprinkler system, similar to what we have on many roads, which clears the snow from accumulating with running water.
