Niigata is shrinking

Living in Niigata as a foreigner, population decline is something I notice in everyday life. There are plenty of shrinking shopping areas and smaller communities out here where you can see the effects of Japan's changing demographics firsthand.

Some new figures are an indication as to how significant the issue has become, with NHK reporting that Niigata's population fell by more than 30,000 people in the year to January 2026. Part of it is natural causes (people passing away), but the other part consists of what the article referred to as a "social decrease" where 6,885 more people left the prefecture than those who moved in. That was the third-highest net population outflow of any prefecture.

The biggest concern is that many of those leaving are young people, particularly women in their early 20s. Like many rural parts of Japan, Niigata is struggling to convince younger generations that they can build the careers and lifestyles they want without moving to Tokyo or another major city.

As a foreigner, I think it's interesting to think about what this means for those of us who live here. Rural Niigata has a lot going for it, from beautiful scenery and a slower pace of life to affordable housing. In saying that, keeping smaller communities alive requires jobs and opportunities that give young people a reason to stick around.

I think it's also a reminder that population decline makes international residents like us increasingly important. We're able to help fill labor shortages and support local businesses, but I don't think we can solve the problem alone.
