Current data about the costs of having a baby in Japan

For expats in Japan planning to start a family, the cost of preparing for a new baby can come as a surprise. A recent survey by baby product rental specialty store Nice Baby suggests that the average cost of childbirth preparation sits at around 266,000 yen, although actual expenses can vary pretty widely depending on individual lifestyles and choices.

The biggest portion typically goes toward baby essentials, averaging about 162,000 yen. This includes major items like cribs, strollers, and clothing, which are costs that can quickly add up, especially if you're buying everything new. Maternity-related items such as clothing and hospital stay necessities come in at around 36,000 yen.

Medical expenses are another key consideration. While Japan offers subsidies for prenatal care and childbirth, out-of-pocket costs still average roughly 68,000 yen. However, these figures can fluctuate significantly depending on the hospital and specific care required, with some families reporting much higher delivery costs.

One important takeaway for expats is the variability. Total costs can be influenced heavily by factors like whether you opt for private or public hospitals, and how much you rely on new versus secondhand items.
