Things I didn't do early on: Visit Osaka

My first 4 years living here were spent in the Tokyo area, and as a result it seemed like any time I traveled domestically, I wanted to get away from "city vibes" places. For a little while, Tokyo felt stifling (coming from Australia, anyway), and it seemed like the urban area went on, and on, and on. I'd visited places like Tottori and Shimane well before I visited Osaka.

I will say, when I did finally head there, I was pleasantly surprised that it had a very different vibe from Tokyo. Not that there's anything wrong with Tokyo, but sometimes I feel like cities just all feel alike, no matter where you go in the world. I was pleased that Osaka had a character all of its own, and I really love the foodie culture there in particular.

If you've been to both Tokyo and Osaka, how do you find them in comparison to one another? Do you have a favorite, and if so, why?
