If you already like melonpan but wish that it had a bit more of that crispy, crunchy exterior, then this sugar melonpan option from 7-11 at the moment is well worth trying out. They've done a great job of caramelizing the sugar and margarine on the bottom of the product, so the crispiness gets an A+. Price-wise, I felt like this was pretty reasonable, coming in at 192 yen including tax. These days I feel like anything at the convenience store under 200 yen feels like a decent deal, and this is a fairly sizeable bread product so no real complaints on that front.

This is quite a calorie-dense bread, coming in at almost 400 calories for the entire thing (387 to be precise). Obviously I don't think anyone is going out there purchasing a melonpan and expecting it to be a health food, but I do think this one is higher in calories than others I've seen -- probably because of the layer of caramelized sugar on the bottom of it. That point aside, this was really tasty and I think the extra crispy, crunchy exterior was a nice addition. As it's a limited time product it's likely to disappear from store shelves as quickly as it appeared, so pop in to your nearest 7-11 store if it sounds like a must-try to you. Happy eating, and enjoy!
