Food delivery in Japan, a convenience that can feel costly
A new survey by Biz Hits Co., Ltd. neatly captures a reality that I think many of us expats in Japan can probably relate to, and that's utilizing food delivery services. When I first arrived in Tokyo at the start of my expat journey, food delivery was a real lifeline. Supermarkets felt unfamiliar, and for a while I felt intimidated to just try out restaurants in person. In my current location (the countryside of Niigata) delivery services are limited, but I still understand exactly why they appeal to so many people.

The November 2025 survey of 486 users found that the biggest advantage of food delivery services is not having to go shopping, which was cited by more than half of respondents. Saving time on housework and making cooking easier followed closely behind. Meal kits in particular were praised for reducing the stress of meal planning and preparation, while other benefits included greater menu variety, less food waste, and access to fresh, nutritionally balanced ingredients.
The biggest downside cited was cost, which wasn't any great surprise to me. Half of all respondents said food delivery "feels expensive," with delivery fees and ingredient prices often well exceeding supermarket costs. Other frustrations included not being able to see products before buying, the hassle of being home to receive deliveries, and the time lag between ordering and arrival.
If you order from food delivery services here, what are the biggest pros and cons for you?
