Attitudes towards umbrella use in Japan

With the rainy season already having arrived in parts of Japan, it's a good reminder about the importance of umbrellas, which are often seen as more than just tools for staying dry. A recent survey by Cross Marketing Inc. covered a few insights into how people across the country use and think about umbrellas, which feels pretty timely!

One of the most notable findings from their research is that one in four men now use parasols, primarily as a way to guard against the heat. This shift suggests that practicality and comfort are beginning to take precedence over long-held gender stereotypes, with the general consensus in the past being that they were items for women.

The survey also highlighted how people shop for their umbrellas. Clear plastic umbrellas are most commonly bought at convenience stores, while sturdier long umbrellas tend to come from home centers and supermarkets. All-weather and stylish umbrellas are more often purchased online.

Another interesting point was the seasonal awareness reflected in umbrella use. A decent chunk of those surveyed start using parasols in May, showing just how attuned people are to seasonal changes. The shift from spring to summer often comes with a greater awareness of the sun, humidity, and sudden rain showers, and earlier umbrella use reflects this sensitivity.

Finally, many women surveyed viewed umbrellas as part of their fashion sense, not just as weather gear. I can understand why that would be, with so many cute umbrellas available here!

Do you see your umbrella as a fashion statement, a functional tool, or a combo of both?
