A reminder about ski lift safety in Japan

I saw in the news yesterday that a young Aussie woman lost her life after a ski lift accident in Nagano, and I found it pretty upsetting. Incidents like this are a big reminder that even in familiar and well-managed environments, accidents can happen in ways that no one expects.

It's important to say that this incident wasn't about recklessness, and it all came down to a loose waist belt buckle on her backpack which ended up getting caught in equipment. Many people have likely ridden ski lifts with backpacks on without a second thought, and with no negative consequences.

For us as expats in Japan (especially those of us who are enjoying ski resorts this winter), I think it's a good time to reflect on safety habits we may take for granted. Listening closely to lift staff and asking for help if something feels off aren't signs of inexperience, but are a massive part of looking out for ourselves and each other.
