Wakayama Relocation Fair returns to Tokyo
For any City-Cost expats dreaming of a slower pace of life, Wakayama Prefecture is offering a chance to find out what relocating could really look like. The Wakayama LIFE Relocation Fair 2026 will take place in Tokyo's Yurakucho district on October 24th, and it's set to bring together representatives from 18 municipalities to answer questions about making a home in the prefecture.
The free event is designed to be approachable, with informal, standing consultation booths where visitors can chat directly with local reps. Topics include housing, childcare, employment, relocation support, and opportunities to get involved in local communities. Anyone who's interested in starting a business or working in agriculture, forestry, or fisheries can also learn more about the options available.

You already know I'm an advocate for rural life out here in Niigata, so it's cool to see other prefectures trying to promote relocation to their areas, too!
Three talk sessions will offer a more personal perspective on life in Wakayama. Some of the speakers include a former Tokyo resident who moved to Wakayama City with her family and now runs a community connecting newcomers, as well as a regional revitalization team member who works on the World Heritage-listed Kumano River in Shingu.
I think that for us as foreign residents already living in Japan, the event could be an opportunity to explore alternatives to metropolitan life, whether that means more space for a family, closer connections with neighbors, or even a career change. I also think that hearing directly from people who have made the move may also help visitors understand the practical challenges involved in settling somewhere new.
Entry is free, although visitor registration is required. Also, attendees who consult with representatives from at least three municipalities can choose a gift featuring local Wakayama products, which is a pretty cool motivator to go check it out!
