Ready-prepped sansai

At this time of year, our local mountains are filled with a bunch of different mountain veggies, or sansai. I feel like they can look a bit mysterious if you didn't grow up with them, and while I've learned about them over the years, if you're new to Japan there are some easy ways to try them out.

My local farmer's market sells ready-made sansai tempura, and I think it's such a win. Instead of wondering how to prep or cook something like kogomi, you can just pick up a  pack and dive straight in. Tempura is probably my favorite way to enjoy mountain veggies, so this is super convenient!

The variety of osozai is awesome, isn't it? I wouldn't know where to start with sansai, either, so I can understand buying the prepared variety. Some of my TtoE blogs mention dishes I attempted after trying store-bought versions.
