A cool (literally!) initiative by Joetsu City

With another heatstroke warning in effect for us in Niigata today, knowing where you can cool down if you have to be out and about is super important. That's a big part of why I love a new initiative being promoted by Joetsu City, where 171 facilities across the city have been designated as "Suzumidokoro", or cooling spots. Basically, they're places where people can pop in and take a break from the heat for free.

The designated locations include city facilities and community centers, but also everyday places such as convenience stores, supermarkets, and post offices. You can spot participating locations by their "Cooling Down Spot" posters, and the city has also published a list of the facilities, addresses, and opening hours online.

The article Iinked above mentioned that last year, 87 people in Joetsu City were taken to hospital with suspected heatstroke, with almost half of those people aged 65 or older. A conveniently located air-conditioned space could make a real difference, particularly for older residents and anyone who is struggling with the heat.
