How often do you check in with your household finances?

One of my goals for the coming year is to get a better handle on our household finances. I want to be more intentional about how we spend and save, and finally make time to look into investing. A new Japanese survey suggests plenty of other parents could use a financial reset, too.

Miraii Co., Ltd. surveyed 340 parents of elementary school children in September 2026, and while 98.2% agreed that household finances and future plans should be reviewed regularly, 70.4% said they didn't review theirs even once a year.

Investments were another area where good intentions didn't always translate into action. Although 53.8% of respondents used Japan's NISA investment account system, 73.8% of NISA users weren't regularly reviewing their investment strategies.

Rising prices were the biggest reason parents reconsidered their finances, while starting kindergarten or elementary school was the most common child-related trigger for a review.

The survey also found that many parents weren't sure where to start, lacked confidence in their financial knowledge, or simply couldn't find the time to sit down and work through it all. That's something I can relate to!

I don't expect to overhaul our finances overnight, but I'd like to start by understanding where our money actually goes and setting some savings goals that work for our family. I'd also like to explore investing rather than putting it in the too-hard basket, which is where it's been sitting for a while (oops). I think the trick will be making financial check-ins a regular habit instead of waiting until something forces us to take a closer look.
