What families in Japan want to do in February

February in Japan might be cold, but it's a surprisingly busy period if you look at how families actually want to spend their time. A new nationwide survey by Iko-Yo Family Lab gives a pretty clear picture of what's on people's minds for the upcoming month.

Topping the list across all age groups is Setsubun, and coming in second is Valentine's Day, which is often less about grand gestures here and more about small rituals, homemade sweets, and getting kids involved. February to me feels very much a "do things together at home" kind of month, and I think the survey reflected that.

In saying that, what families want to do during the month has noticeable shifts as kids get older. Households with babies and toddlers tend to focus on low-effort, at-home activities and gentle outings like hot springs or short trips to see snow. Once kids hit preschool and elementary school, interest moves toward experience-based activities, with skiing, snow play, ice skating, and even visits to large public baths ranking highly.

By the upper elementary years, families are prioritizing memorable experiences, choosing winter trips and active outings that everyone can enjoy.

What have you got penciled in for the upcoming month?
