The cries of frogs

The cries of frogs photo

We have so many frogs leaping around in our yard. My son loves chasing them, catching them and just staring and watching their little bodies beat to the rhythm of their hearts. I don't mind them too much except when cutting the grass. I am always terrified will hit one. I cry every time it happens. My husband.... hates them. He is bothered by sounds. If there is a ticking or dripping noise, anything rhythmic and annoying, he gets extremely stressed out. These past few nights, about five actually, my husband hasn't been able to sleep because of the frogs. There are a few rice paddies near our house and now that it is warm, we leave the windows open. Well we knew exactly when the rice paddies were filled with water in preparation for planting rice. The frogs' unifying cries knock out any thoughts you might have in your head while laying down to sleep. And just as you start getting used to them something startles the frogs and they go silent. Only to have their chorus of voices build right back up into deafening screams.

Totally. I don't know why I didn't pick up earplugs the first year we lived here. I felt like I was on safari every night because the frogs sounded so wild to me. It's funny because I know there were frogs near where I lived as a kid, but maybe not close enough to bother me. Luckily the rice field closest to us has been put out of use to eventually be sold off for housing. Plus if you can hear frogs it probably means they aren't using pesticides for the rice. (Not that this helps with sleep.)
