Yamazaki bread cinnamon roll
I’m going to have to start this post off by rating this cinnamon bun as a 4 out of 10. I think a cinnamon bun would actually have to be a zero for it to be a bad cinnamon bun so six isn’t too terrible. But it certainly didn’t have the most important key factors that a cinnamon bun should have.
I will say given that it was made in Japan for a Japanese pallet it did have enough cinnamon in it. This is a magical thing in this country because very rarely do I ever find anything that is actually cinnamon enough to be labeled a cinnamon anything.
Where it fails is in its bread quality and its stickiness. The bread itself wasn’t very doughy and heavy like a cinnamon bun should be. Like everything baked in Japan, it is light and fluffy and airy, almost similar to some croissants I’ve had here. It’s means it still tasted good but it wasn’t what I wanted and of course what I want is the most important factor.
Then there’s the amount of sugariness in the swirls. The cinnamon swirl portion almost tasted like they had mixed cinnamon with leftover breadcrumbs. It wasn’t like a sticky sugary paste that comes from just butter sugar and cinnamon baked into the role. Again, not a bad thing but definitely not a good thing for a cinnamon roll.

I was also really excited to see icing on the top. I’ve come across cinnamon rolls here they don’t have icing on the top and while that’s fine, it can still be a really good cinnamon roll. If it’s got the sticky factor baked in the middle then having icing isn’t necessary. This icing however was almost like somebody looked at a picture of a cinnamon roll and then without ever having tasted it made something that looks like it should be on top. It actually reminded me of a buttercream frosting another rarity in this country. So I didn’t quite hate it. It wasn’t what I expected and next time if I do get this roll I might scrape off the buttercream frosting to add it to something else later. But I’m not really sure I’ll get the cinnamon roll for myself. My son absolutely demanded to have one bought for him and only for him later on so I will have to buy at least one more.
