Sushi birthday cake
My daughters are often not home when their birthday's come around because it is always over summer vacation and they go off to their other mother's. This year our younger daughter doesn't even live with us anymore but our oldest was here for the first half of summer thanks to her junior high school obligations. I took the opportunity to give her a fun little birthday party with her favorite food.
Sushi.
She really wanted a sushi cake. This was her only request, so I went online to get some ideas on how to give her what she wants.
Looking in English came up with some great results, but all of the "seaweed" portions of the cakes were made of marzipan which I wasn't prepared to make, or some other thing with black food coloring which I couldn't find in any store around.
Thats when I thought to look in Japanese online to see what ideas Japanese people have.
Nope.
"Sushi cake" only came up with sushi in the form of cake, not cake shaped like sushi.
I even looked for 「寿司みたいなケーキ」cake that looks like sushi. But then, I found an image of a roll cake for sale that looked like a sushi roll. And the diagram of the lovely cake showed that it was wrapped in a chocolate crepe as the nori(seaweed).
Perfect!
I then found white chocolate coated rice puffs for the rice at the grocery store.
The "salmon" is made out of watermelon and the "sea urchin" is just some caned peaches.
It was a fruity delicious success!
She also enjoyed the grocery store sushi plates we had for dinner. A real treat because we never eat them at home.
