Daiso campaign stamp collecting

Stores in Japan often have campaigns offering free stuff or cheaper entry fees and such. In the States, you will often find buy one get one style deals but here in Japan stamp collecting is used to encourage customers to keep coming back and spend more during the campaign. After collecting enough stamps, you can get free merchandise or vouchers or some other gift. Even my hometown has a stamp campaign to encourage residents to continue shopping in town instead of going to the neighboring cities for their groceries. I don’t typically care much for the gifts they have to offer, but this summer there has been a campaign going on at Daiso the 100 yen store, for an awesome looking knife set. However, Daiso knows how to get all my money. Each knife in the set requires a certain number of stamps and then 600 yen when completed. You can receive one stamp for every three hundred yen spent. Considering just how often I shop at the hundred yen store, collecting those stamps was a no-brainer.

Within a month I was able to purchase the only knife that I really wanted, the houcho or kitchen knife. Houchos in Japan are often expensive yet skillfully made. The houcho on offer looked pretty legit. Until this campaign, I had been using a flimsy cheap knife that might actually have been purchased at Daiso. So was taking part in the campaign worth it?

Oh yes. This knife is massive but well balanced, just like you would expect from a well made Japanese blade. Its size makes chopping cabbage so much easier. There is only one problem. It isn’t very sharp. That is fine because by the time I had turned in my paper with the stamps to get the knife, I already had a row collected for my next item, the knife sharpener.

This has now sharpened both my new houcho and my flimsy old one. If you already spend all of your money at the 100 yen store, these knives are very worth it. They must be popular because the knife sharpener was out of stock when I went to get mine.

@ReishiiTravels I think this campaign showed me just how often I go to Daiso. It is almost embarrassing. The staff know me by name!

@edthethe lol! I wished I knew about those campaigns. I like the Daiso stores too but don’t get to go often enough because of the little one, however now that he’s getting bigger I shall be trekking off more. Please keep me in the loop for these sort of stuff :) I also think some things go over my head because of my poor Japanese. Getting there though.
