The description

Oyatsu Co., as part of a Mottainai Fish Utilization Plan, produces Sakana no Sunakku, a crispy snack made with konoshiro, or gizzard shad fish. The snack is available at 7-11 convenience stores.

The good

In search of a crunchy, salty snack at 7-11, I spied Sakana-kun, the bubbly fish researcher, on this package of Sakana no Sunakku. Sakana-kun, a passionate ichthyologist, is often on TV and is celebrated at Tateyama City's seaside. The snacks are made from konoshiro, gizzard shad, from the fishery off Funabashi City in Chiba Prefecture. The snack is made from wheat flour, prepared tatsuta-age style. Tatsuta-age is a marinade with soy sauce, mirin, and ginger. The marinated item is then rolled in potato starch and deep-fried.

The not so good

Sakana no Sunakku is a crunchy, flavourful snack with loads of umami provided by the tatsuta-age flavouring and the konoshiro fish. It's priced about the same as similar snacks, such as potato, corn, and wheat-based snacks. There is a lot of information on the package, and you can read more on Oyatsu Co's website. The impulse for the snack is to keep the konoshiro fishery active. The fish is very bony, so it's less appealing to consumers. Harvesting the konoshiro, according to the project, maintains ecosystem balance, too.
