The description
Kagome Shikuwasa Mix is a time-limited product. It's a boxed drink made with 50% vegetable and 50% fruit juice featuring shikuwaasa, the citrus fruit that originates in Okinawa Prefecture.
The good
The citrus fruit known as shikuwaasa in Japanese originates in Okinawa Prefecture. This fruit, also called the Okinawan lime, is low in sugar and super tart. The juice is often thinned for alcoholic drinks and it's used as a garnish in lots of Okinwawan-derived dishes. This juice in Kagome's vegetable juice line is a mix of fruit juices, a lot of shikuwaasa, and vegetable juice. The sourness is offset by sweeter apple, pineapple, and veggies that have more sugar content like carrots. It's great chilled.
The not so good
I was on a bike ride when I passed by a Family Mart convenience store that carries this juice. The tiny box comes with a straw. Sipping it slowly and savoring the fruity and veggie concoction was great on my rehydration pit stop. It's best to resist the urge to drink it right away. Pack it home, chill it, and cut the package open so that you can serve it over ice or in a chilled glass. This is one of those 季節限定, kisetsu gentei, or seasonal products. The box is small and is supposedly available for a limited time only. Get it while you can!
