The description
7-11 convenience store's own brand of small sides, Cup Deli, varies by region and season. Found at a Kanto region 7-11 at a Chiba 7-11 is mackerel with grated radish, mushrooms, and ponzu sauce.
The good
By now, you know I have a weakness for tangy foods. I was drawn to this 7-11 "Cup Deli" item, Jikabiyaki saba no oroshi ponzu. It's grilled mackerel with grated radish and dressed with ponzu sauce. This dish delivers on flavor. The pungency of the grilled mackerel is offset by the grated daikon radish. The buna shimeiji mushrooms soak up the flavors of both ingredients. The contrast of the tender mackerel and mushrooms with the smooth daikon make it really appealing. This dish is good over rice or a side in a bento box lunch.
The not so good
Jikabiyaki saba no oroshi ponzu is a good side dish or a main over rice in a pinch. It's loaded with flavor, texture, and nutrition. But could I prepare this at home from scratch for cheaper? These days, a few slices of mackerel are going for 300 yen a packet. Ponzu? I have that in my pantry. Buna shimeiji and enoki mushrooms are about 100 yen a piece. Add in a half a daikon at about 100 yen. I can imagine preparing this dish in about 15 minutes and about three serviings for the price. But I'm not knocking this deli version. It's inspiration for when I have energy to prepare the same dish.
