The description

Daiso 100 yen stores stock a wide variety of kitchen cleaning items. This 100 yen kitchen sponge in the shape of a cactus is made from cellulose, a natural fibre.

The good

For kitchen cleaning, I often repurpose worn-out towels and clothing. However, for kitchen sponges, I rely on 100 yen shop items. Most sponges sold at Daiso 100 yen shops are made from synthetic fibres, but also stocks a few natural fibre versions. There were two choices, one per package. One is a gray elephant and the other that I opted for is an apple-green cactus. The shape is convenient for cleaning edges and corners, especially for narrow glassware. Because its a natural fibre, it's biodegradable.

The not so good

These Daiso cellulose sponges are 100 yen a piece. I could have bought a half-dozen synthetic ones for the same price. I opted for the cellulose version because they're as effective as nylon. And they're biodegradable. I do my best to reduce plastics in my household waste. Next time I'll go for the gray version. The first time I used the brightly-coloured cactus, it turned the water green! After a few rinses, the water ran clear. I'm diligent about drying it out as cellulose sponges can harbour bacteria.
