The description
Takara Shuzo's Maruoroshi Shikuwasaa sour is a liqueur drink with no artificial sweeteners and has 7% alcohol. The product was released in spring 2022 and is available at some convenience stores.
The good
This interpretation of a sour, a shochu-based sour, comes from Takara Shuzo. The drink has been offered since the spring of 2022. A sour is usually a shochu-based cocktail mixed with fruit juice, usually citrus, and a sweetener such as honey or sugar syrup. This one is made with shikuwasa citrus pulp. Shikuwasa, an aromatic fruit originating in Okinawa, has a tart and bitter flavor that lends itself to mixed cocktails. The scent of the drink is aromatic from the shikuwasa and the flavor is snappy and clean.
The not so good
Maruoroshi suggests whole, crushed fruit, and what you get is a full-bodied fruit-laden cocktail in a can. It's certainly an aromatic fruit-based drink reminiscent of calpurinha or mojito drinks which are made with lime and sugar over ice. I have no complaints about this one. It's nice to sip, and while it does have a high alcohol content, the bitter and citrus flavors are quite prominent, so it doesn't smell too strongly of alcohol. You could mix this drink yourself, but it's hard to find shikwasa outside of Okinawa.
