The description
Sapporo's brand of Otoko Ume Sours offers Umashiso Ume. It's a 5% alcohol canned shochu highball flavoured with pickled plums and shiso, or perilla, leaves.
The good
Are you an umeshiso fan? I have a weakness for the combination, and when I indulge in sushi, I always get umeshiso maki to cleanse my palate. Umeshu is a lovely drink to sip, too. In early summer 2026, Sapporo offers Umashiso in their line of Otoko Ume Sours. I was a bit skeptical, but the 300 ml can is low-risk at 170 yen. So I went for it. It's a nice variation. The drink isn't too boozy at 5% grain alcohol. The flavour is pleasingly tart, bitter, and lightly sweet. I found it at a FamilyMart convenience store.
The not so good
If you're into ume shiso, plum and perilla, this ready-to-drink shochu highball is for you. It's okay, and a nice alternative to citrus-flavoured sours. Note that the label has a word play! Ume means plum, and uma is the abbreviated version of umai, or tasty. Product labels are always a language lesson for me, and this one put a smile on my face. This canned cocktail is a limited-time product, available in summer. It's a tipsy way to get your tangy plum fix. I think it's best well-chilled. I found it at a FamilyMart.
