The description

7-11's lineup of ramen to go includes this spicy hakusai stamina ramen. For 580 yen, you get a hot bowl of ramen loaded with hakusai, carrots, bean sprouts in a garlicky broth.

The good

Pirikara hakusai stamina ramen available at 7-11 convenience stores is not bad. This variety of ramen originated a few decades ago in Ibaraki Prefecture. Typically, the broth is based on soy sauce and unlike classic ramen, it's topped with lots of vegetables, typically carrot, leeks, onions, and cabbage. The spicy broth is served hot or cold. The convenience store clerk heated it up for me and it had a lovely garlicky, spicy aroma. It's pretty satisfying and heaped with hakusai cabbage. This is a good "futa", a lid after you've had a few beers.

The not so good

While the packaging describes the ramen as "pirikara", spicy, it didn't have as much bite as I had expected, but nothing to complain about. For 580 yen, you get a good portion of noodles swimming in broth with lots of veggies. But is it "stamina ramen"? It looks like there are various interpretations of this ramen variety. This one is in soy sauce broth, but it doesn't have the characteristic heartiness and thickness of the Ibaraki stamina ramen dish. Still, it's a filling and satisfying variant of the dish.
