The description
7-11's Premium Gold brand teams up with the legendary Chuka Soba Tomita to produce an instant version of their signature tonkotsu ramen dressed with pepper oil.
The good
Chuka Soba Tomita, multiple winner of Ramen of the Year, is located in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. The ramen shop is popular and has limited seating, so you have to get a ticket and wait an hour or two to be served. The chuka soba is without exaggeration, the best I've ever had. The broth is creamy and light at the same time, and the noodles are al dente. 7-11 occasionally has Tomita tsukemen, but it hasn't been available at my local for some time. So I opted for this instant version. The tonkotsu broth is just like the real thing.
The not so good
Okay, so instant ramen is never going to measure up to even a mediocre ramen experience. Although the broth is just as I imagined - creamy, full of umami and piquant - the noodles are only an approximation of good noodles. In order to get the maximum flavor and texture from this instant version, follow the directions carefully. The cool part is that there is a QR code on the label which shows you how to prepare the noodles for the best effect. Would I get this again? Sure, just for the broth. It's a tease, this instant version. Now I want the real thing!
