Buying butter is a commitment. This year Meg Milk Snow Brand butter in a 100-gram package is about 500 yen. I'm not a huge consumer of butter, but it's hard to resist, so when I was at my local 7-11, I opted for a smaller package, 10 pieces measured in 10-gram increments. I use the butter sparingly, a pat of it in the frying pan with a dash of shoyu mushrooms and onions, or half of one melted on a slice of toast. The butter is lightly salted. It's expensive compared to the larger packages but the 10-gram pieces make portion control a cinch.

At 300 yen for a package of 10 pieces at 10 grams each, this Hokkaido butter isn't a steal. However, if you're conscious of portion control and regulating your fat intake, this might be for you. Note that, if you're converting a recipe from tablespoon and cup measures, a tablespoon is equivalent to about 14 grams (the liquid measure of a tablespoon is 15 ml).
