The description
In the summer matsuri season, 7-11 convenience stores offer Spice Sauce Flavour Tamago Soba Meshi. It's a rice ball intended to capture the flavours of summer festival food stalls.
The good
The English on the label doesn't do this rice ball justice. It simply reads "egg and stir-fried noodles". The spice sauce flavour egg soba meshi rice ball has a lot going on. The label is adorned with lanterns typical of summer festivals. The rice ball is topped with a circle of fried egg. Under the egg are sticky, sweet, spicy soba noodles just like the yatai stall fare. This goodness sits on top of yakimeshi, fried rice with spices, sauce, and all the toppings you expect at the yatai. This limited-time rice ball is 170 yen.
The not so good
This reasonably-priced festive rice ball picked me up! I recommend trying it if you're a fan of festival yatai, or food stall fare. The aroma of the spice, fish flakes, nori seaweed, and whatever that magical yakisoba sauce has in it took me back. The scent and the texture reminded me of hot, sticky nights, the soft lighting of paper lanterns, and festival dancing. Biting into it made me realize I'm suffering "natsubate", summer fatigue, and one of the best remedies is to go out to enjoy a festival!
