The description
Kameda Confectionery with a huge share of the rice cracker market, offers a line "Asian Yum Yum", rice crackers featuring flavors from around Asia. This one is Thai-inspired rice crackers.
The good
A favorite snack that goes with beer, tea, and just about anything is Kameida's rice crackers. In 2023, Kameida has taken a crack (sorry for the pun) at Asian flavors. This time, I picked up a package of Thai-inspired tom yam gun flavored rice crackers. If you are not familiar with Thai cuisine or just don't know the terms, tom yam is a spicy and tangy soup flavor. The rice crackers aim to capture the flavor of tom yam gun, hot and hour prawn soup. The chips capture the piquant and umami flavors and have a satisfying crunch.
The not so good
These rice crackers are pretty good, capturing the tang and umami flavors that you encounter on your trips to Thailand or at Thai eateries in Japan. Kameida has been working on appealing to the Indian market with localized flavors. On the domestic market, the Asian Yum Yum line is aimed at Japanese consumers who have spent time abroad in other parts of Asia. I liked the tart and umami-laden chips that reminded me of my trips to Thailand to savor the cuisine there. For a cheap, Thai-inspired snack, this is pretty good.
