The description

This is a package of four amanatsu citrus briefly available at Belx Supermarket in a Chiba suburb. The growers of this variety use only organic fertilizer.

The good

This package containing four uniformly-sized amanatsu citrus fruit caught my eye for two reasons. First, the price was very reasonable, 400 yen, for four. On top of that, they are brought in from a prefecture I've yet to visit - Saga. The skin of the fruit is quite fragrant with strong bitter and astringent notes. The wrapper recommends slicing the fruit in half and eating it with a spoon the way you would with grapefruit. They're very juicy with pips that are easy to pick out with a spoon. The fruit is good at room temperature or well chilled.

The not so good

These are lovely fruits, very juicy and sweet, and reasonably priced. I highly recommend them. The fruit is ready in April. I got mine in May. The more I read about Yobukocho Amanatsu, the more interesting it got. It turns out that the fruit are a subtype of amanatsu grown on a tiny island in Saga Prefecture. The farmers experimented and eventually succeeded in growing organic produce. The fruits are used to make jelly in the whole rind of the fruit. I recommend eating the fruit as is. They're large, sweet, and fragrant fruit.
