The description
Asahi Brewery's draft beer, Maruefu, was initially launched in 1986 but discontinued in favor of Asahi Super Dry. The beer is a pale lager based on rice, hops, and corn.
The good
Asahi Superdry became the typical offering at izakayas and supermarkets in the 1980s, and Maruefu was discontinued as a retail offering. This beer at 4.5% sold out in 2021 making it hard to get. It's got a lovely straw color with just the right amount of head when you pour it. It's got a sense of noble hops, a good malty flavor with a touch of citrus in the mix. I think it's got a good mouthfeel, nice to savor slowly. This is now my favorite dinner beer, reasonably priced and for now, widely available in the shops.
The not so good
I wouldn't say there are any negatives to this one. Just don't expect a lot of complexity from Maruefu like you would get from craft beer. It is after all a mass-produced beer like its more commonly available counterpart, Asahi Superdry. From what I could glean from Asahi Brewery's website and beer aficionado blogs, this beer got so much attention when revived in 2021 that Asahi ran out of stock and the beer was hard to come by. Apparently now, Asahi is keeping up with the demand for this 80s revival beer.
