English Language Matters: Can you name these movers and shakers?
You look left and right on the trains, and everybody is on their smartphones. But I look up at the posters. I find the design motifs, turns of phrase, and topics fascinating.
Recently, on the Joban line, I've noticed ALC's campaign posters for a business English program. You might have encountered their materials as a teacher, parent, or business professional. The monochrome posters feature movers and shakers from Japan's Meiji era.

The sole woman in the group is Tsuda Umeko, sent with the Iwakura Mission to the US as a child. She returned to Japan and faced the challenge of recovering her Japanese language proficiency and founded a university. On her right is chemist and entrepreneur Takamine Jokichi. In the middle of the group is Shibusawa Eiichi, founder of many businesses and modern banking. He's the only one of the group who did not master English.
I'll stop here. I challenge you to name the others.
